Usagi’s Stand

So I was watching Sailor Moon the other day, and people kept griping about how whiny Usagi is. I understand that she’s a pretty hyperbolically comical cartoon, but I think she just comes off as way more whiny in the dub (which is generally pretty annoying to start).

And you have to kind of consider that her character’s a fourteen-year old girl along with what’s happened to her.

“Hey, Usagi! Guess what, monsters are here to destroy the world, and you have to go save it. Here’s your uniform. Try not to die. We’ll try to find you some help with that whole soldier business later. By the way, your grades suck. Do something about that.”

I would not have kept it together that well at fourteen. I feel like, realistically, if she’s being whiny, maybe she’s just struggling to salvage the time to be a kid before she goes and has to kill things or else she and her friends would all die and the world would die with them. After the SuperS Arc, I kind of picture her having a sort of stalwart resolve after every battle, getting all mussed up and stuff.
